Idiot%26#039;s Delight is fun. Maybe only a game or two at a time, but fun enough. Grandfather%26#039;s Clock is a personal favourite of mine, as is Russian Solitaire. A friend of mine tried to teach me Besieged Castle one time, and what I saw of it looked really fascinating.There%26#039;s a list of solitaire variants on Wikipedia here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_solitaire_card_games you could browse through looking for something interesting.
I%26#039;ve always preferred building houses of cards over solitaire games, despite never getting above that elusive 1M mark.

If, by %26#039;long journeys%26#039; you mean for playing IN a plane, train or automobile, you%26#039;re in trouble. Most solitaire games require an inordinate amount of space to set your cards out. Idiot%26#039;s delight would work, but is really only fun for at most an hour or so.
Consider electronic alternatives such as handheld Poker, or even Battleship or Yahtzee.
If you decide that%26#039;s not your thing, buy a Rubik%26#039;s Cube or a set of those little wire puzzles with the interconnected bits you have to separate. Origami, chess problems, Go problems or even something like knitting might keep you entertained, too. They%26#039;d all be good out of a vehicle, as well.
Hope one of those suits your fancy.
